Cologne Hospitality in the Heart of Berlin: Kölsch, Schnitzel & Group Space at Gaffel Haus

April 2024 Update: Located at Dorotheenstraße 65, right next to the Maritim Hotel, Gaffel Haus serves Kölsch-style hospitality from 12 PM to midnight. While I won’t start a Kölsch debate here, know that they also offer a decent bottled Pils. A small Kölsch goes for €2.60.

I recently tried the pork schnitzel—at €20, not cheap, but generously portioned and tasty. It came with a savory lecsó-style sauce that worked well. The fried potatoes, however, were a letdown—soggy and not crispy. I’d recommend going with mashed potatoes or fries instead. The service was very friendly, and for evenings, a reservation is recommended (via the website). There’s also the Ludwig Erhard Room, a semi-private area that seats up to 32 people. A lunch menu is available from €6.

May 2022 Note: These days, several southern German beer brands have opened brewpubs in 10117, but Gaffel has been around longer than most. Kölsch might be divisive, but good brewery fare isn’t. The lunch menu remains affordable, and the Ludwig Erhard Room offers a nice venue for private gatherings. For Mitte, Gaffel Haus is relatively budget-friendly—and they sometimes show football, especially if a team from Cologne is playing.

January 2022 Note: If you’re looking for genuine Kölsch hospitality in Mitte, Gaffel Haus delivers. You’ll find traditional German fare and Kölsch beer in a spacious setting where reservations aren’t always necessary. A classic Mettbrötchen (raw minced pork roll) is even available as a snack. For smaller events, there’s a separate room for up to 20 guests.
