At a time when Kosovo is at a crossroads, one name is cropping up more and more frequently in conversations among citizens, politicians and international observers: Lumir Abdixhiku. The chairman of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has positioned himself as a candidate for change and wants to take over as prime minister in Pristina on 9 February 2025.

In a country marked by economic challenges, political tensions and the ongoing quest for international recognition, Abdixhiku embodies a new hope – not only for the people of Kosovo, but also for the large Kosovar diaspora, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is closely linked to the fate of its homeland. After all, almost 500,000 people with Kosovar citizenship live in Germany, many of them in the Rhine and Ruhr regions.

A country in transition

Kosovo, Europe’s youngest state, is in a crucial phase. Despite significant progress since independence in 2008, the country continues to face structural problems: high unemployment, weak infrastructure and a political landscape often characterised by stagnation. The upcoming elections on 9 February 2025 mark a turning point, and Lumir Abdixhiku is at the centre of this historic election.

Abdixhiku, who holds a PhD in economics and is the father of two daughters, brings not only academic expertise but also a deep connection to the concerns of citizens. His ‘Tour of Change’ campaign has taken him across the country to speak directly with people, listen to their concerns and offer concrete solutions. His slogan, ‘Be the Change,’ is more than just a campaign slogan – it is a call for a new beginning that has mobilised thousands of people and brought hope to the country.

A vision for the future

Abdixhiku’s economic vision is ambitious but realistic. He aims to increase Kosovo’s budget to 5 billion euros and generate additional investments of another 5 billion euros. His goal is sustainable economic growth of 5 per cent per year, based on European standards. These plans are not only crucial for the country’s economy, but also for its rapprochement with the European Union, which is a strategic priority for Kosovo.

His political agenda focuses on transparency, good governance and the fight against corruption – issues that need to be addressed urgently in the current political climate. In his numerous interviews, including with international media, Abdixhiku repeatedly emphasises that Kosovo needs not only political but also moral reforms in order to regain the trust of its citizens and the international community.

The connection to North Rhine-Westphalia

Germany, and North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, plays a central role in the Kosovar diaspora. Hundreds of thousands of Kosovars live in North Rhine-Westphalia, many of whom have been rooted there for decades without losing their connection to their homeland. For them, Lumir Abdixhiku is not just a politician, but a symbol of hope for a better future for Kosovo.

The Kosovar community in North Rhine-Westphalia has high expectations of Abdixhiku. They see him as a bridge builder who can further strengthen the close ties between Germany and Kosovo. Germany is one of Kosovo’s most important partners, both in terms of economic support and political stability. Abdixhiku’s plans for closer ties with the EU could create closer cooperation and new investment opportunities that would benefit both sides.

A man of the people

What sets Lumir Abdixhiku apart from many of his political rivals is his personal approachability. As a family man and academic, he embodies a combination of intellectual strength and emotional intelligence that makes him a credible leader for many citizens. His ability to explain complex economic issues in an understandable way while taking the concerns of ordinary people seriously has earned him broad support.

His opponents accuse him of being too idealistic, but it is precisely this idealism that inspires many people. At a time when scepticism and disappointment are widespread, Abdixhiku offers a vision of hope and progress. He believes in a Kosovo that is not only economically prosperous, but also socially just and politically stable.

A new beginning for Kosovo

The elections on 9 February 2025 could mark the beginning of a new era for Kosovo. Lumir Abdixhiku stands for change that is urgently needed. His economic expertise, political vision and personal integrity make him a strong candidate who has the potential to lead the country better than the current incumbent.

For the people of Kosovo and the diaspora in North Rhine-Westphalia, Abdixhiku is more than just a politician – he is a symbol of hope for stability, prosperity and a better future. If he wins the election, Kosovo could take an important step towards EU integration and international recognition. The world will be watching developments in Kosovo with interest – and Lumir Abdixhiku could be the man to lead this small but significant country into a new era.

The President of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament, experienced CDU politician André Kuper from East Westphalia-Lippe, is also certain: ‘The people from Kosovo who work here have become an indispensable part of our society. Many of them came to us because of the civil war and are now fully integrated. For the future of Kosovo, we need a generation that thinks and acts in a European way.’

Lumir Abdixhiku makes that clear.
